GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

Guidance Services are an important part of the total educational program at Valley Christian School. Through the services of the counselor, assistance is provided to help students in career and college decisions while also helping students have a successful experience at VCS. Counselor assistance is also available in the areas of academic, spiritual development and student mentorship support. Specifically, he/she will work under the supervision of the school administrator and coordinating efforts with principals, administration, and all teachers at VCS.

 

CONTRACTED BY: Valley Christian School Administrator and Secondary Principal, Salaried Position

 

TIME REQUIRED: August 2024 – June 2025, Part Time Position (Note: The position may be expanded to a full-time position if the candidate can fulfill other needed responsibilities in the school*)

 

SUPERVISES: VCS Secondary student academics, college/career pathways, assessments and assists with class scheduling.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Shall be a member of the certified staff with experience in education Guidance Services.
  2. Shall be a committed born-again Christian with a Spirit-led Christian life and testimony.
  3. Shall exhibit spiritual maturity and concern for the spiritual, social, emotional, and academic welfare of the students within the ministry of a Christian School.
  4. Commitment to a Biblical Worldview philosophy of education.
  5. Shall hold a minimum of a bachelor’s degree and be certified by ACSI (or willing to obtain such certification) in Guidance Services.
  6. Must have a working knowledge of Standardized Testing (SAT, ASVAB, etc.) and score applications.
  7. Must have current awareness of college entrance requirements and application procedures.
  8. Familiar with the process of applying for, and obtaining grants, and other financial aid.
  9. Must be able to keep confidence and use mature discretion in dealing with students, parents and personal information.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Spiritual Leadership:
    1. Help create an atmosphere of spiritual awareness in the student body through his/her positive spiritual leadership and life testimony.
    2. Maintain an attitude of Christ-like helpfulness in all situations within the school.
  2. Guidance:
    1. Plan and implement a program for the purpose of helping students plan their high school and post-high school careers.
    2. Oversee and administer PSAT testing and act as a resource for students, parents, and staff when they have questions regarding SAT college entrance and placement examinations. Schedules and facilitates annual ASVAB testing.
    3. Provide annual academic statistics with comparative data for identification of targeted student learning goals strengths and deficiencies from testing. Collaborate plan with administration and teachers to achieve targeted learning outcomes at VCS.
    4. Meet with each senior regarding graduation and future post-graduation plans.
    5. Inform students, parents and staff regarding financial aid, scholarships, and other pertinent college information (Panther Tales, Parent Nights, Maintain Promotional Materials).
    6. Provide regular communication to juniors and seniors and their parents concerning college/career information keeping them informed of important dates, opportunities, and programs.
    7. Offer seniors and juniors professional career experience through direct professional contact – This may be work experience or career visitation. (Career Day – Job shadowing for seniors after spring break)
    8. Access transcripts for grades 8-12 including directed studies students for tracking toward graduation and post-high school choices – Official transcripts are maintained yearly by the VCS Registrar* and coordinated with the Guidance Counselor to be stored permanently in the registrar database for both current students and graduates of VCS. These will be utilized to track graduation needs of current students and provide post high school records for graduated students’ college applications etc.
    9. Be available to serve in a support capacity as needed (i.e., Service Projects, Retreats).
    10. Work with the Secondary Principal to provide orientation to incoming 7th graders and freshmen to ease transition into Junior High and High School.
    11. Assist the administrator with senior graduation procedures, planning and implementation.
    12. AP Test Coordinator and Concurrent Credit Program Monitor (correspondence, paperwork for College Board, test ordering & payment, final exam administration).
    13. Provide updates to website page from Guidance Counselor (scholarship performance & statistical information etc.).
    14. Works with Secondary Principal and Registrar* to provide course registration and scheduling for grades 8-11 (spring and August).
    15. Provide liaison service for teachers, students and parents as needed as it pertains to academics and classes.
    16. Attend professional development workshops as able (i.e., Washington Council. Local Counselor’s Consortium, ACSI, etc.).
    17. Assist with participation in community opportunities (Miss Spokane Valley/EWI Scholarship Opportunities/State Fair facilitation).
    18. Assist with the promotion of the school program to the public via testing data, Alumni statistics, and college attendance percentages etc.
    19. Provide academic counseling services to the student population in a professional and effective manner in accordance with the Valley Christian School’s mission, purpose, and core values.
    20. Maintains professional, effective, and punctual communication with parents, staff, and students regarding the activities under Guidance Services at VCS.
    21. Timely completion, correspondence, and mailings of college sensitive transcripts, references and application information in conjunction with the VCS Registrar.
  3. Teaching:
    1. Plans and teaches a daily class to seniors covering Career Pathways and other post high school preparations.
    2. Make arrangements for frequent college, military and vocational visits and field trips.
    3. Direct and monitor seniors in completing an online Personal Finance course.
    4. Maintain classroom management, attendance and grading for the class.

 

* NOTE: The Guidance Counselor position could become a full-time position if combined with the role of Registrar. Candidates should indicate if interested and qualified for Registrar responsibilities.
